Description

Overview:
Situated in sector 1 of Chandigarh, the Rock Garden is an expansive open-air gallery showcasing sculptures crafted from urban and industrial debris, ingeniously conceived and executed by Nek Chand, a former Road Inspector in Chandigarh. Nestled between the renowned Sukhna Lake and the Capitol Building, this spectacle is an essential destination for visitors. Also referred to as Nek Chand’s Rock Garden, this sprawling 40-acre oasis is a vibrant tapestry of artistic expressions and statues. Located on Uttar Marg in Sector 1, it’s approximately 1.5 km from Sukhna Lake by cab, with convenient access via buses and auto-rickshaws.

The exhibition space of the Rock Garden is segmented into three distinct phases, each adorned with diverse installations and embellishments. Each phase presents a unique array of creations, making strolling through them a captivating experience. From terracotta pots to light fixtures and even repurposed toilet pots, Mr. Nek Chand, the creator, has truly revolutionized the concept of art and craft.

Constructed in 1957 by Officer Nek Chand single-handedly during his leisure hours, the Rock Garden has since become an enduring symbol of creativity and innovation in the city. Housing approximately 5,000 statues, it stands as a testament to the concept of ‘Best From Waste’, exemplifying the transformation of discarded materials into breathtaking works of art.
